As our world keeps growing with new technology, we’re discovering more handy gadgets, especially for our cars. Just like power locks and heated seats changed what we expect from our vehicles, key fobs have also made a big difference.

We rely on our key fobs. So, it’s useful to know what to do when they don’t work.

What’s a Key Fob?

A key fob is a little electronic tool that does lots of helpful things, like opening your car’s doors, and trunk, setting off the alarm, and even starting your car from far away. But what if your doors aren’t unlocking when you press the button? Your key fob might not be working right.

The good news is, that most times when a key fob stops working, you can fix it yourself. Yep, you might be able to get it working again without needing to unlock your car the old way.

Programming a Key Fob

Different cars have different ways to program their key fobs. Here’s a general guide to help you out. If this doesn’t work, you might need to look for specific instructions for your car.

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Change the battery in your key fob. Sometimes, the fob stops working just because the battery’s dead. If you change it and it still doesn’t work, move to step 2.

Step 2: Get inside your car. Sit in the driver’s seat and make sure all the doors are shut. Have your key fob and car keys with you.

Step 3: Turn on the ignition. Put your key in and turn the car on, but don’t start the engine.

Step 4: Press the lock button on your key fob. Hold the key fob and press the lock button. Aim it towards the front of the car.

Step 5: Turn off the ignition. Switch off the car’s electrical systems.

Step 6: Repeat. Do the same thing about four times: turn on the ignition, press the lock button on the key fob, then turn off the ignition.

Step 7: Listen for the locks. When your key fob is programmed, you’ll hear the locks in your car respond. That means you’re in programming mode. Quickly press the lock button again to secure it.

Step 8: Test it. Once you think your key fob is programmed, step out of the car and try it. Lock and unlock the car, pop the trunk, and so on. Hopefully, you’ve got a working key fob!
